Welcome to a medicinal journey!
This project focuses on herbs grown in and around the Piedmont Triad Region of North Carolina. Geographically, the Piedmont Triad is the central region of the state, bordered on the east by the Coastal Plains and on the west by the Blue Ridge Mountains. All told, the region comprises about 45% of North Carolina’s land area and covers the entire state from Virginia in the north to South Carolina in the south. The climate is, in general, mild but it is cooler than that of the Coastal Plains.
Native Americans first settled in the region over 1,000 years ago. The Pee Dee Indians settled a site now called Town Creek where the Town Creek itself meets the Little River in Montgomery County. The Catawba came a bit later and settled in what are now Mecklenburg and Union Counties. Today, Interstate 85 generally follows the “trading path” that extended from Virginia in the north to present-day South Carolina. Upon European arrival, diseases such as smallpox devastated the native populations but didn’t destroy them completely.
